HISTORY The ABA Place was founded, almost by accident, by Jenni Helms. Jenni was frustrated by a lack of activities for her son, who has Autism. She decided to have a "play date" at her house for other kids on the Autism Spectrum. She invited her son's "home trainers" to help organize activities and work with all of the children. It didn't take long for this play group to grow... and grow... and grow. As more and more families became interested in participating in the play group, it became clear that there was a overwhelming need in the community for a program that provided a structured learning opportunity for kids with Autism in a fun and playful environment. PHILOSOPHY The ABA Place is a non-profit organization that combines FUN with the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Our services will always be FUN, affordable, and educational. What is ABA? ABA is defined as the science in which the principles of the analysis of behavior are applied systematically to improve socially significant behavior, and in which experimentation is used to identify the variables responsible for change in behavior. Many confuse ABA with Discrete Trial Training (DTT). However, ABA encompasses many different techniques, DTT being only one tool in the ABA arsenal. ABA in Autism also includes naturalistic (incidental) teaching, Pivotal Response Training, Environmental Engineering, and Verbal Behavior.
